Bowling at the Sheffield Lounge

The Sheffield Lounge Charity Super Bowl

To celebrate the opening of our Virgin Money Sheffield Lounge, we’re hosting a free Charity Super Bowl event over the weekend of 16 and 17 July, inside the Lounge, on our very own 10 pin bowling lanes. For every pin you knock down we’ll donate £1 to one of three local Sheffield charities. Over the weekend up to £20,000 could be raised.

One of the unique features of our Sheffield Lounge is the full size bowling lanes, and we’ll be opening our doors to everyone to bowl and raise money for charity. We’re also installing three temporary bowling lanes outside the Lounge at the top of Fargate where children will be invited to bowl, with their scores contributing to the charities too.

Sheffield Lounge Bowling Lanes

Our Sheffield Lounge manager David Baker said:

We’re keen to forge strong links with the local community. Our Charity Super Bowl event is the first of many local initiatives and events we have planned in Sheffield. We’re so lucky to have the most amazing facilities here in our Lounge and we want to use them to help benefit the wider Sheffield community.

And the Lounge is holding an ‘open house’ for members of the public to enjoy the facilities, even if you’re not yet a Virgin Money customer.  Visitors can also enjoy the Lounge games area where they can play air hockey, pool and table football.

Join us on Saturday 16 July from 9am to 5.30pm and on Sunday 17 July from 11am to 4pm.

Virgin Money Fireworks Concert

Bowlers inside the Lounge will receive a free Lounge day pass and be entered into a prize draw (terms apply) to win a VIP trip to Edinburgh’s famous festival season including two nights’ accommodation for four at Hotel Indigo, tickets to the Virgin Money Fireworks Concert and a behind the scenes tour with the fireworks pyrotechnicians.

The Charities

The charities to benefit from the Charity Super Bowl weekend were selected by a panel of judges including the editor of Sheffield’s Star, Nancy Fielder. The three charities are St Wilfrid’s Centre, Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and Pitsmoor Adventure Playground.

The Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust

The Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust

The Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust cares for and manages 12 nature reserves across the city, all freely open to the public.

The money raised will be used to carry out urgent work on the infrastructure of the Foxholes Complex, three linked nature reserves which lie end to end along two miles of the Rivelin Valley. This work will benefit both wildlife and the community of Sheffield who can enjoy this area of stunning countryside for free.

Pitsmoor Adventure Playground

Pitsmoor Adventure Playground

Pitsmoor is a staffed Adventure Playground providing indoor and outdoor facilities for 8-13year-olds, and younger children with adult supervision, in a deprived and diverse area of Sheffield.

The funding provided will help support play activities and events at the playground and help support additional activities for groups of children outside normal opening hours as well as supporting family orientated events to celebrate the diverse cultural traditions in their neighbourhood.

St Wilfrid’s Centre training kitchen

St Wilfrid’s Centre training kitchen

St Wilfrid’s is a day service for the homeless and vulnerable people of Sheffield. The money raised will help refurbish the training kitchen where recently housed and vulnerable people are taught how to cook.

The kitchen upgrade will allow the centre to help their clients learn this valuable life skill as well as enabling them to provide daily three course lunches for the homeless.

Nancy said:

There are so many worthy charities doing fantastic work in Sheffield and choosing just three to support was a very difficult task. The three we’ve chosen add a great deal to the life of the city, either supporting the vulnerable, enhancing the lives of children or preserving the beautiful countryside which we’re so lucky to enjoy.

Fran Belbin, finance and funding manager at Pitsmoor Adventure Playground, added:

We’re thrilled to have been selected as one of the charities to be supported by the Virgin Money Super Bowl event. What an innovative way to raise funds for good causes – our children are practising their bowling skills already in the hope of clocking up a good score!
