On Monday we joined the Walking With The Wounded for the start of their second leg of the #WalkOfBritain. The expedition will see four British and two US wounded veterans walk 1,000 miles across mainland Britain, starting in Scotland on August 22 and finishing at Buckingham Palace on November 1.
Like the South Pole Allied Challenge back in 2013 the team is comprised of wounded veterans with either physical or cognitive injuries sustained in the line of duty, which will all make the walk that much more challenging.
Virgin Money is proud to be supporting the team as they walk through the North East of England, and was there to see them as they crossed from Scotland to England at Coldstream.
The walkers had a fantastic send off from the town and were piped down the high street before crossing the Tweed. Monday’s route took them through Ford, Doddington, Chatton, and finishing at Chillingham Castle where they stayed the night.
It was fantastic to see so many people coming out to meet the team, and drives and cyclists stopping for a chat and donating in the buckets as they walked along.
We’ll be following the team all week, if you’d like to support them you can view the full route for the Walk of Britain to see if they’re coming past you.
Walking with the wounded work support veterans with physical, mental or social injuries to develop new careers outside the military, re-integrate into society and provide long-term security for themselves and their families.
If you’re inspired by the team you can support them with a donation. If you see the team while they’re walking they’re carrying donation buckets. You can also donate online through Virgin Money Giving or buy a mile of the walk.
