Studio West is an enterprise and innovation campus based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, offering 13-19 year olds unique learning opportunities that lead on to future careers. We were delighted to link up with 11 students from Studio West as part of our Strive2Thrive challenge. Born from our relationship with BPP – our corporate partner for the Future Bankers’ Academy who run events for children, preparing them for work – we worked with Newcastle Council to find schools to pilot with. We engaged with local businesses for volunteers and the response was resounding and as a result of the work put into planning and design, we now have a complete programme for use in the future with other groups.
This three day event focused around preparing the young people for the world of work, as they considered their own skills and how these relate to key business functions, as well as exploring business culture. The young people took part in various challenges and workshops, had the chance to hold practice interviews and even to create their own Virgin businesses! They were joined by volunteers from Sage, Northumbria University, Dickinson Dees, Tesco Bank, Virgin Active and Virgin Money.
At the end of day three, parents and volunteers were invited to join in for a very Virgin celebration. The children talked their parents through their journey using a presentation they had created, after which parents, volunteers and children chatted for an hour or so about the experience, and the children’s plans for the future.
You can see more of what the children got to up to via the Studio West Facebook page.
