We’ve been joined by Georgiana for the week who was doing her work experience at Virgin Money. Georgiana has been spending most of her time with IT Security but has joined us at the end of the week in the Social Media team. Here’s what she had to say about her time with the IT team.
“I’ve spent the last 5 days doing my work experience at Virgin Money. I can honestly say that it was one of the best weeks I’ve had; full of new experiences, knowledge and wonderful people. I have gained a detailed insight in IT Security with the help of Ms Wendy Brett-Reynolds who I would like to thank for the warm welcome and delightful experience.
With technology playing an increasingly significant part in our daily lives, security will become more and more compulsory. The knowledge I’ve gained about security, not only at Virgin Money, but generally in our day to day lives will always stick with me and I hope will assist me into reaching my career goals. During the 5 days I came to understand the importance of the smaller things such as having capital letters and numbers in your password and simply keeping your software updated. However, I was also given comprehension of a bigger picture of networks and measures of security which are to be used in more desperate circumstances, which I had the fortune of not coming across.
The London office in which I was situated for the week was full of lovely people who I am very grateful to have met. As an aspiring student this was such a confidence boost for me, not having being involved with an office environment before.
The experience definitely makes me look forward to a future in IT, especially since I am part of the Next Tech Girls experience. This is a programme designed to introduce more females in the IT work industry by giving more young girls a chance to explore the vast world of technology and acquire a better understanding of the benefits involved.
Additionally I’ve spent some quality time with another two charming IT ladies Ms Paula and Ms Claire. During my time with Ms Paula I learned a lot about what it means to be a team leader and have to work with people in different locations. She opened my horizons to the importance of support in IT, how elaborate the system is and how much it helps to communicate with your team members so that the bank is running smoothly.
Ms Fiona Kelly told me a lot about monitoring systems. She showed me ways in which Virgin Money protects their customers. This made me question the security of my own personal information and the safety of my own computer.
On a final note I would like to thank the Virgin Money team for making this possible and being outstanding hosts, I send them my best wishes.”
