In December 2015 the Virgin Money Foundation, the independent charitable foundation launched by Virgin Money, announced that it had awarded its first round of individual grants to 25 charitable organisations across the North East region with a total of £1m being donated.
Edbert’s House is a recipient of the 2015 North East Fund; an exciting community project in Gateshead, working “to make [their] community a happier, healthier place to live.”
Edbert’s House applied for funding to cover the cost of a worker to develop their community bakery in order to help them grow and make the bakery profitable and sustainable. They have since opened a new centre, Pattinson House, in the Nest and Old Fold Estates in Gateshead.
Edberts have teamed up with another local charity – Earth Doctors – to train local people to bake a selection of artisan breads from local, organic ingredients. Their local community have loved meeting new people, working together and understanding more about how healthy foods can be made from scratch.
Six months on and Pattinson House is running weekly baking sessions, with local people increasingly taking a leadership role. Their quality, locally produced goods are being distributed in the community and at local schools. They are hoping to introduce healthy pizzas to their range soon!
