Ideas we love: The Chokeables & Sally’s Cooker

The Chokeables by St John Ambulance

What’s the big idea?

A 40 second animated first aid film by St John Ambulance teaching people how to help a choking baby, featuring the voices of David Walliams and Johnny Vegas.

Why do we love it?

Getting any message across in 40 seconds is difficult, but to get such a vital one delivered with a few good jokes thrown in for good measure is incredible. The best testimony? According to St John Ambulance there are 54 babies whose parents say they wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for The Chokeables.

Sally’s Cooker Appeal by Wakefield Hospice

What’s the big idea?

When Wakefield Hospice’s 26 year old cooker gave up the ghost, they turned to Facebook to ask for help funding a replacement machine for chef Sally. The people of Facebook responded and hit the target of £5,000 in less than 24 hours, going on to raise a whopping £16,000 in four days.

Why do we love it?

Just the right mix of humour (“Wakefield Hospice has had a ‘gas’tastrophe”) and heartfelt appeal (“this cannot wait”) meant this campaign really caught the public’s attention. The fact that chef Jean Christophe Novelli officially cut the ribbon on the new cooker was the icing on the cake.
