Christmas Campaign

Ideas we love: Christmas Campaigns

Ideas we love

This edition of Ideas We Love is a very special one indeed. Over the last two months we’ve been asking you to share your Virgin Money Giving campaigns with the promise to boost our favourite by £1,000. We were overwhelmed with the response and loved going through all the entries, and are very happy to announce this year’s winner and runner-up.

The runner-up…

Musical Christmas Lights for the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust

What’s the big idea?

Shining some light in the darkness in more ways than one, the Shepherd family have turned their home into a winter wonderland this Christmas to raise awareness about mental health. Every afternoon at 4.30pm thousands of lights transform their Marlow Bottom home into a thing of festive wonder and all they ask in return is that those who like it donate to the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust.

Why do we love it?

You need to have a hard heart not to love a Christmas light show, but to use the warm feelings fairy lights create to generate support for a charity dedicated to helping young people struggling with depression takes a very special family.

What’s the secret of its success?

The spirit of Christmas + a whopping electricity bill = the light fantastic.

The winner…

German Shepherd Rescue Elite’s Christmas Advent Countdown

What’s the big idea?

A fundraising advent calendar with a difference, GSRE’s Christmas campaign sees a picture of one of the gorgeous German Shepherds in the charity’s care posted across their social channels every day alongside a call for donations.

Why do we love it?

Because the dogs are lovely, the wording is urgent and the charity’s complete approach (they don’t only look to re-home dogs, but they also keep them in their original homes by offering training and behaviour advice to owners who are struggling to cope) clearly keeps the animal’s needs at the heart of everything they do.

What’s the secret of its success?

By highlighting one dog a day and using emotive language, referring to Christmas as the “Dump your old dog for the new puppy time of year” – the charity’s rallying call is impossible to ignore.
