The World Food Programme is the leading humanitarian organisation fighting hunger worldwide, providing food to some 80 million people in around 80 countries each year. As part of this work, the World Food Programme provides school meals to about 20 million children annually through its School Meals Programme.
In 2016, Virgin Money ran an initiative whereby for each contactless payment made with a Virgin Money Credit Card, we donated a school meal to a child in Mali, via the World Food Programme. We successfully donated over 250,000 meals, which helped provide nutrition to some of the most vulnerable children in the world.
One million school meals
Last year, we set ourselves an even bigger goal – to donate one million school meals to the World Food Programme by the end of the year.
We are thrilled to announce that we have achieved our goal and what’s more, Mastercard® has pledged to match our donation, meaning an incredible two million school meals will be donated!
One out of every nine people in the world have insufficient access to food and over 3 million young lives are lost each year due to malnutrition. Improving the nutrition and health of school children not only creates an incentive for regular school attendance but it also increases academic achievements, leading towards a more developed world and a better future for children everywhere.
No one organisation can address this alone and Virgin Money’s partnership with Mastercard and the World Food Programme is helping fight against global hunger.
We couldn’t have achieved our goal without our Virgin Money Credit Card customers. Thank you for your support and for helping us work towards a world of equality and social inclusion.
